Learning Modules

Module Info

Module 1 includes 5 categories of learning. You will learn about the definition of a health coach and why coaching works. Training will discuss how coaching differs from other professions, the responsibilities of a coach, how a coach must engage in different practices, and relational skills needed to be good at your job. You’ll learn to define a coaching presence, evaluate strengths, and discover and evaluate the client’s current state of wellness.
Module 2 includes learning how to help the client understand the status of their well-being and find resources to help them further that understanding. You learn how to set expectations and explain the coaching process. One of the most important pieces of coaching is building rapport. This Module breaks down how to do so with a variety of characteristics. You will learn how to attend to the client’s state of being and emotions.
Module 3 includes a deep understanding of Positive Psychology–The strength of positive emotions, the value of gratitude, acceptance, and compassion. You will learn how to use Positive Psychology, the principles of Learning, Doing Being, and the 5 phases of Appreciative Inquiry.
Module 4 covers the 4 principles of Motivational Interviewing. It teaches on how and why Active Listening is important in coaching, when it is appropriate to use open-ended questions, why we use reflections in coaching, and how to expand the conversation with a client to prevent hitting a wall. You will learn how to refocus a coaching session, and view a recorded demonstration of coaches using Motivational Interviewing well.
Module 5 breaks down everything you need to know about your first coaching session–from preparation to closing, the stages of change, addressing ambivalence, and creating wellness visions with a client. You will learn how to help a client set SMART behavioral goals and how to identify barriers that might block these goals. In Module 5, you will receive a recorded demonstration of goal setting and you will participate in your 1st Practical Assessment.
Module 6 includes everything you need to know about the follow-up session with your client. How to assess and address goals, receive and give feedback, teach self-compassion, and more. The module will cover two types of motivation, how to use self-efficacy and problem-solving. You will receive your second Practical Assessment.
Module 7 is all about conducting the final session with a client. You will review what it means to have and discover a growth mindset and how and why it is crucial to build a support system. You will be equipped to assist in developing sustainable pathways for clients to avoid slips, lapses, and relapses for continued maintenance and long term success. You will have your 3rd Practical Assessment at the end of this module.
The 8th Module is all about health and disease prevention. You will learn about Hypertension, lipid abnormalities, Cardiovascular disease, (pre)diabetes, obesity, and Metabolic Syndrome, arthritis and chronic diseases. The training will cover how exercise, sleep, stress, mental and emotional health all play into these diseases and the health of a person. You will have a Practical Skill Assessment at the end of this module.

Missed the last training of 2024? No worries, sign up for our next session that begins early 2025.
Life happens, we get it! No need to fret over a missed session. For the best shot at passing the Board exam, we recommend missing no more than 3 sessions of the 23-week training.
Mentorship is a crucial element for learning and coaching practice. We designed our program to give you intimate group training sessions where you will meet with a coach to practice role-play, ask questions, and receive real-time feedback.
As a member of the Restore Coach Institute, you will be well-equipped with the training resources you need to best set you up for a successful career in coaching. You will receive a Course Syllabus, a digital coursebook for each Module, quizzes, recommendations for enhanced reading materials, and recordings of all presentations.
You are not required to take the board exam to become a health coach. However, many job opportunities include it as a prerequisite for employment. In addition, there are many benefits to becoming a Board Certified Health Coach including: proof of your qualifications and knowledge, access to a private networking community, extra learning opportunities and shared resources, invitations to sponsored events, and inclusion in the NBC-HWC National Directory.
